Before hitting the market, some car models such as BMW 5-series GT, BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz R-Class were expected to help their manufacturers earn giant profit. However, their sales have actually been modest. Now, let's take a look at top disappointing cars in 2011.
BMW 5-series GT
Hitting the market in November 2009, the BMW's 5-series Gran Turismo (BMW’s 5-series GT) was believed to be a stylish alternative to minivans and crossovers, but the sale of this quirky five-door have been disappointing. "The disappointment I have is that I thought a lot of our 5-series station wagon customers would go with the GT." BMW of North America CEO Jim O'Donnell said.

BMW sold 2,848 GTs in 2010 and just 720 in the first four months of 2011
BMW X6
Though BMW X6 was introduced as a sports activity coupe that combines the attributes of an SUV with the stance of a coupe, the car couldn’t appeal buyers because of its chunky styling and high price, the turbocharged M version even cost nearly $100,000. That’s the reason why BMW has sold just 1,559 BMW X6 versus more than 10,000 X5.

Mercedes Benz R-Class
The same situation happened to Mercedes R-class that was first introduced in 2006. This low-roofed minivan with three rows of seats was initially marketed as a sports cruiser but it actually failed in attracting user's attention.

Only 195 Mercedes R-class units were sold during the month of April
Ford Flex/Lincoln MKT
The Flex and its Lincoln sibling that made their debut in 2008 seemed to arrive on the market in the wrong time, when consumers looked for vehicles with less-exaggeratedly large proportions. So far in 2011, only about 2,000 Flexes are finding buyers each month.

The Flex was often placed behind Chevy Traverse and Toyota Highlander in the showrooms

Toyota Tundra
Though Toyota invested all its brains and brawn behind the second generation Tundra by surveying buyers for wanted features and building a dedicated assembly plan in San Antonio, the model couldn’t be sold out due to the recession and Toyota’s recall crisis.

In 2010, Toyota only sold 93,309 Tundra units
Nissan Quest
Standing at the fourth position behind the big trio including Chrysler, Honda and Toyota, Nissan tried its best to close the gap. However, while it has sold out just 3,335 Quests this year, Honda has rolled out 36,306 Odysseys.

Nissan Quest cannot be sold out due to two major reasons, Nissan is far down the shopping list for minivan buyers and its design looks big on the outside but small on the inside
